The Jones Residence
Problem:

The HVAC system for the Jones Residence has 2 chillers with six fans. The town of Greenwich, Connecticut has a city ordinance stating that the allowable noise level at the property line is 55 dBA from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and 49 dBA from 10:01 p.m. to 6:59 a.m. During a sound test by the city, the residence was found to have the following levels:

  • 1 Compressor
  • 1 Compressor + 1 Fan
  • 1 Compressor + 6 Fans
  • 6 Fans
  • 12 Fans
  • 45 dBA
  • 47 dBA
  • 55 dBA
  • 55 dBA
  • 56 dBA
The city then ascertained that the residence did not comply with the allowable noise levels and that action must be taken to correct the problem.
Solution:
RINK Sound Control designed an enclosure that would attenuate the noise produced by 1 Compressor and 6 Fans running at once down to 50 dBA as per the customer's request. The design consisted of an enclosure constructed of RINK LAS-4 Acoustical Louvers and a roof of RINK 2" panels mounted on top of each chiller in a penthouse fashion. After the treatment was completed, the new sound levels at the property line were measured as such:
  • 1 Compressor
  • 1 Compressor + 1 Fan
  • 1 Compressor + 7 Fans
  • 6 Fans
  • 12 Fans
  • 45 dBA
  • 47 dBA
  • 49 dBA
  • 49 dBA
  • 50 dBA

The residence passed the sound test and did not require further modifications.
